Building a home that you are happy with takes time and as you are forever growing and changing so does your taste. Not everyone has a consistent budget or the time to do a full refurb or decor change to their entire home but there are simple, time-saving weekend projects that you can book yourself into doing that will still have a great ‘new home’ effect. As mentioned before, building a home takes time, and having a little weekend project here and there will make all the difference and allow you to finally make your home feel like your happy space.
Start At The Front Door
Something that will not only brighten your home for your neighbours but also is a simple, affordable and fun thing to do over the weekend that will get you excited to walk through your door. Start off by making sure the paint is waterproof and suitable to go over your door. But preparation is always key, whether it’s sanding down and adding primer to your door on day one or applying paint or glaze over the day after.
Some people even recommend you take the front door off before you begin painting. This not only protects all your hardware but also allows you to apply a smooth and even coat all around. Be sure to consider getting new hardware to better suit the new adopted aesthetic.
Do your research, as if you’re going to do it, you should do it properly, as it’s the first thing your guests and yourself will see so finishing touches and precision are key. Watch some tutorials by others if you are ever unsure of how to deliver the perfect results.
No Carpet Stairs
A very popular home trend recently seems to be getting rid of all the carpet on your stairs, while this might be dependent on the type of carpet you have installed and how easy it would be to remove. The process is pretty similar to what you would do with the door, so remove all things such as carpet, any staples or nails that no longer need to be there.
Investing in or renting a sanding hand tool could be a smart move so you can get all of your steps smooth and ready for a primary coat or a fresh layer of glaze and wood stain.
Now it’s time for the fun part! Adding a runner, which is essentially a rug that drapes over your stairs. This gives you the best of both worlds but go the extra mile and install some metal work in between stairs. This is a great way to add some style and modern flair to your hallway without paying a fortune to replace your carpet.
Building a Plant Window Garden
I recently saw on the app we all love and know, TikTok, where someone built essentially a bookcase around a window without any nails and created their very own window garden where they placed little glass jars with their herbs, little plants and whatever they wanted to grow in the sections while still allowing all of the light from the window to come through.
Simply get some thin wood panels from your local store, sand and cut them into a bookcase without a back panel, if that makes sense. The way they get it to not require nails is by perfectly measuring the pieces so they all fit around the window and are secure enough to hold these little jars. This would be a perfect addition to any kitchen or even dining room, depending on the vibe and window type.
Gallery Wall
I have seen many people add art to a single wall or having a dedicated gallery wall and I love it. Especially in places where you don’t expect much to be going on, you can take full advantage of it and spruce up one boring area and make it just as special as the others. Whether it’s the laundry room or even the wall next to the stairs, you can dedicate some time to hanging a collection of artwork, family pictures and other little pieces that go with aesthetic of the house.
I would always recommend that you cut out pieces of paper in the shapes and sizes of the frames and use these to map it out on the wall. This allows you to freely move things around and experiment with the structure without committing to anything yet.
Add A Temporary Canopy
Speaking of things that I saw online, the canopy is definitely onethat that has stayed in my brain because it’s the first thing I will be doing when i move. Essentially, I saw the same person add a canopy feature to their bedroom and it looked so easy that anybody could do it. After picking and settling on a location you are happy with your bed being in, you find two thin to medium poles that are an appropriate length for your bed. These poles are secrewed into hardware that dangles down a couple of inches and screwed to the ceiling. I hope you are still with me!
These poles are being hung on either side and are at the front and back ends of the bed, giving you enough room to find a big enough piece of fabric to slide through both and drape over the bed giving you style, sophistication and a mesmerising place to sleep. It’s a great way to elevate your bed frame without having to cash out on a 4 pillar framed bed.
Not to mention you can switch out the draping fabric whenever you feel like it so you could have something sheer, patterned or both if you truly wanted.
Final Thoughts
When it comes to little projects you can be getting on with over the weekend, the list is plenty, but I hope at least one of these ideas inspired you to work on your space and bring some of your personality to life.
It’s great that none of these projects are expensive and are accessible to everyone; just be sure when and if you are ordering things such as hardware, paint and even fabric that you are going through trusted authentic vendors. You don’t want to order something that comes in 10 sizes too small or not at all. Make sure verifications are checked to avoid any ugly bank scams.
